Saving Water, Saving Energy: Integrated Approaches to Addressing Climate Change and Protecting Rivers is a half-day workshop that will cover the intersections between water, energy and climate change with an emphasis on how grassroots watershed groups can work with utilities and policy makers to apply water-oriented approaches that help communities both minimize and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Thanks to generous support from the Alliance for Water Efficiency, River Network has teamed up with the Pacific Institute, the Oregon Environmental Council, Energy Trust of Oregon, the Oregon Association of Clean Water Agencies, and Portland State University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders to learn and discuss how to address some of the regions most daunting environmental challenges.
Participants in this workshop will gain an improved understanding of how to implement local programs and convey messages designed to address global warming through reduced demand for both water and energy. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to meet others who are sustaining water supplies and addressing climate change by utilizing the connection between water and energy.
Key topics covered in this workshop include:
- An overview of the projected effects of climate change in the Northwest
- New tools for understanding the energy and carbpon emissions embedded in different water uses
- The potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by promoting water conservation, efficiency, reuse and low impact development
- Freshwater impacts of energy development
- Local projects and incentives designed to curb greenhouse gas emissions, reduce water demand and improve water quality
Through integrated policies, programs and messaging, we hope communities in the Northwest will take advantage of the synergies between water and energy conservation. This informational workshop is aimed at a range of stakeholders, including grassroots river and watershed groups, utility representatives, policy-makers, educators as well as citizen advocates.
Saving Water, Saving Energy: Integrated Approaches to Addressing Climate Change and Protecting Rivers will take place October 26th, 2009, 12:30pm to 5:00pm at Portland State University. The workshop is free and open to the public but all participants and presenters must register. Space is limited so be sure to register by October 16th!
