The Nicest Thing You Can Do This Week? Nominate a River Hero...

Author: Merritt Frey

Environmentalists have a reputation for being overly serious. For not celebrating victories. For missing the joy. I'm not saying that reputation is deserved, but I am saying I know one event that completely disproves these accusations: the River Heroes banquet.

Every year at River Network's River Rally we all come together to celebrate just a few of our most outstanding river friends -- the River Heroes. This week is the last week for nominations for the 2012 River Heroes. Nominate your noble board member, your hard working grassroots organizer, your dedicated farmer out there preaching the gospel of polluted runoff control....heck, nominate your own self! The deadline is February 3.

Who's eligible? Our handy Heroes website says:

Open to any individual (board member, staff, volunteer or private citizen) who has successfully worked with a river/watershed conservation organization to improve a river and its watershed, AND/OR who over the years has made a sustained contribution to the conservation of the river. Please nominate only one person per application.

What do heroes receive? Beyond our undying admiration (and an excuse for on-going questionable behavior at home):

Award recipients will be honored during a celebratory banquet at River Network's River Rally (May 4-7, 2012 in Portland, Oregon). Honorees will receive a full scholarship (registration and domestic travel) to attend the River Rally, a plaque of commendation, acknowledgment on River Network's web page and in River Network publications, and additional gifts from River Network.

To nominate yourself or another individual for 2012, please make sure your nomination is postmarked on or before Friday, February 3, 2012!

This is a great thing to do

This is a great thing to do for these people who work really hard at raising awareness. We hear so much about what we need to do but we don't hear much about what has been done. It helps to look at accomplishments so that more focus can be built.

If environmentalist are too serious for your bankroll and never celebrate successes then this banquet will help to change that a little because they need to look at what has been accomplished.
