I don’t like to be the bearer of bad news, but a recent study by the Global Carbon Project found that carbon dioxide emissions increased 3% from 2006 to 2007—an even greater increase than the IPCC’s worst-case scenario! Despite an economic slowdown, emissions from developing countries grew faster than expected.

Carbon emissions went up by 2% in the United States and even more in China and India. This increasing rate of CO2 emissions presents some pretty dire implications, but at the very least, it means we have a lot of work to do.

The only silver lining on the growing cloud of carbon are the reductions obtained by some European countries: Denmark’s emissions dropped by 8%, while the U.K and Germany reduced theirs by 3%. This means that reductions are achievable and we now have examples of how they can be obtained. For more information, click here.
