Paddlers make a 350
Author: Bevan Griffiths-Sattenspiel

350.org is one of the best organizations devoted solely to addressing the climate crisis. On Saturday, Oct. 24, join concerned citizens from around the world in 350.org’s International Day of Climate Action.

The International Day of Climate Action is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others in your community who are building the movement to combat global warming. The idea is to stage grassroots events that express the number 350 in some way. For information on the relevance of 350, click here.

Although time is running out, it’s not too late to organize your own event and help your community make the connection between climate and river protection. After all, as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change grimly remarked in their 2007 report, “Water and its availability and quality will be the main pressures on, and issues for, societies and the environment under climate change.”

Even if you are not able to organize your own event, you can still help educate people in your community by joining one of the thousands of fun events already planned. As of today, over 3000 events are planned in 158 countries across the globe. In the United States, it looks like 1255 events are already planned in virtually every state in the Union. To find an event near you, check out 350.org’s interactive map.

In my hometown of Portland, OR, 18 different events are planned for the Day of Climate Action – the only hard part is figuring out which one to go to. Two of my top choices are either going to 350 waffles at Solar Waffle Works or lend a hand helping out to Keep Portland Beered for 350.

Portland also has two river-oriented events where paddlers are meeting up to form giant 350’s in the middle of the Willamette River.

Regardless of what fits your fancy, get out on Saturday October 24th and help make the International Day of Climate Action a success!
