This year, the US Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense program turns 5 and the birthday/anniversary is marked by some momentous water, energy and cost savings achievements as well as a new hilarious ad campaign starring "Rip the Drip."
From the implementation of of the WaterSense program in 2006 promoting the wide-spread use of high efficiency water appliances and fixtures, the EPA has helped consumers save approximately 125 billion gallons of water and over $25 billion in water and energy bills associated with water use. Additionally, the program has helped achieve a reduction of approximately 16.7 billion kWh of electricity and an associated 6 million metric ton s of carbon dioxide emissions.

Also, check out WaterSense's new ad campaign Wasting Water is Weird featuring their new "star celebrity" Rip the Drip (pictured to the right). The underlying message of the campaign is that is is weird to waste water, and when you do so, you get unexpected visits from a weird new friend Rip. Check out the funny/short video clips the EPA will soon be airing as water conservation themed Public Service Announcement TV commercials, the water conservation quiz and fun facts, and the "sweet downloads" including some great ringtones for your mobile device.
Here is my favorite ringtone/song from the new ad campaign.
EPA's WaterSense program certainly has done some great things over the past five years, pushing the limits of water conservation and making efficiency a staple of modern appliance technology, construction and renovation. Keep up the good work WaterSense. Now lets keep pushing for those federal rebate programs to help ensure that every home in the US is operating as efficiently as possible!
