Focus cities are those where River Network has Partner organizations with a solid commitment to working on water conservation, efficiency, reuse and low-impact development. In order to bolster their current work, River Network is helping the Partner organizations in our focus cities make the water-energy connection and frame their efforts as part of a larger movement to address global warming. Leaders working with us in these focus cities are learning from each other and using the progress made by others to spur their public officials to faster, more aggressive action.
For example, River Network is currently working with the Cahaba River Society in Alabama to help them present water conservation alternatives to their local utility board as part of a campaign to turn back proposals for damming a free-flowing local river. In addition, the Alabama Environmental Council has adapted our materials specifically to Alabama’s water issues and has been delivering a public presentation across the state for the last few months. These materials have also been modified for use in Georgia and Tennessee.
We have excellent opportunities for additional activities in up to 15 communities, and are actively seeking additional resources to build these partnerships and implement additional local programs.
