This summer, the Charles River Watershed Association is partnering with Charles River Canoe & Kayak Center to remove the invasive water chestnut plant from the Newton and Waltham area of the Charles. This will be the program’s 3rd summer.

The program relies on volunteers who want to get their hands dirty for a good cause. Canoes are provided for volunteers who wish to go out on the river and pull the water chestnuts, either with rakes or by hand. There will be a short training session preceding the actual pulling of the chestnuts, and any volunteer who completes that training session can come back to Charles River Canoe & Kayak Center at any time to go out on the river him or herself and pull the chestnuts, free of charge.

There will be four public events during the summer, where we welcome any volunteers (RSVP is required). The times of these public events are as
follows:

Thursday, June 25th – 5:30 to 8 PM
Tuesday, July 7th – 5:30 to 8 PM
Saturday July 11th – 10 AM to 2 PM
Sunday, July 19th – 10 AM to 2 PM

We also welcome corporate, neighborhood, scout troops and other groups of 15-60 volunteers at any time during the month of July; contact us to find a time for your group to help out.
