River and groundwater contamination at times poses serious public health threats. In some communities with which River Network has worked, residents have been confronting high numbers of miscarriages, neurological problems, cancer and other disorders likely related to exposure to contamination.
To help local communities better understand those issues, we’ve produced a Water Quality Monitoring and Human Health guidebook as part of a project called Statistics for Action that River Network is collaborating on with TERC, a nonprofit education research and development organization dedicated to improving understanding of mathematics, science and technology.
The guide provides an introductory overview for watershed protection organizations, tribes and neighborhood groups confronting public health concerns related to environmental contamination.
It also helps readers understand how to approach monitoring and how to interpret data collected from industrial effluent and hazardous sites.
