Seven Lessons from the Field: Mergers & Western Environmental Organizations

Author/Source: Kimery Wiltshire, Exloco

Exloco, which recently merged with the Carpe Diem Project to be come Carpe Diem West, has been tracking mergers in the western environmental community for the past few years. Experience has shown that mergers can be an effective strategy when, that is, the focus is on expanding the mission, and not on the often vain hope that two fragile financial boats joined together will magically right themselves. This Issue Brief tells the story of two recent mergers that provide excellent examples of a successful process: The merger of Oregon Trout and Oregon Water Trust to form The Freshwater Trust; and, the merger of Forest Guardians and Sinapu to become WildEarth Guardians.
