California's Water-Energy Relationship

In 2005, the California Energy Commission published a seminal report on the relationship between water and energy within the state. We believe this is by far the most comprehensive statewide analysis of the water/energy connection yet by a governmental agency anywhere in the United States. The California Energy Commissions has documented the vast amounts of energy associated with water pumping, treatment and heating.  In addition to providing a framework and methodology for other states to follow, this report has a number of intriguing findings regarding the cost-effectiveness of saving energy by saving water. In fact, the report concludes that investments in water efficiency and conservation can save up to 6.5 billion kWh of electricity in the state of California for nearly half the cost of traditional energy efficiency programs.
