The Flint River Watershed Coalition (FRWC) is seeking an effective business manager to contribute to our mission of partnering to protect, promote, and improve the Flint River and its watershed. This position is responsible for managing the finance, administrative, and HR operations for this small nonprofit, and plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance to federal and state regulations as well as internal controls.

Position Responsibilities


  • Manage annual budget development and tracking by working with staff to draft annual program budgets, track expenses, and create monthly financial reports and projections for leadership.
  • Coordinate annual financial audit, including serving as auditor’s liaison, organizing required documents, responding to inquiries.
  • Ensure timely submissions of financial filings (990, quarterly IRS filings, annual nonprofit report), and organizational filings (state & city).
  • Develop and update fiscal policies & procedures in cooperation with leadership to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and industry best practices.
  • Grant financial reporting and expense tracking.
  • Accounting:
    • Track all financial transactions in Quickbooks Online software; pulling reports and compiling ad hoc reports as requested.
    • Prepare payments for all bills and invoices, requesting review and signature as needed.
    • Process receivables from donations, grants, and earned revenues, and distribute timely donation acknowledgment receipts.
    • Process expense requests from staff, comparing to approved budget, and submitting for spending approval as needed.
    • Reconcile monthly bank and credit card statements.
    • Process monthly reimbursement requests from staff.


  • HR & Payroll
    • Responsible for onboarding paperwork, key & equipment distribution, and background checks for new staff, including up to 12 seasonal part-time paddle staff.
    • Process payroll, track leave time, confirm annual withholdings and benefits enrollment.
    • Process background checks on key FRWC volunteers, as requested by program staff.
  •  Serve as FRWC’s liaison with insurance providers, conducting annual audits on insurance needs, including commercial liability, directors and officers, workman’s compensation, auto and property insurance, and employee health insurance.
  • Oversee utility and office service contracts.
  • Ensure timely vehicle and fleet registration.
  • Serve as contact to State of MI for raffle and liquor license applications and reporting
  • Records management for all internal HR/business records and organizational equipment inventories.
  • Administration of FRWC business accounts, including admin responsibilities for GSuite, and website.
  • Basic support for FRWC programs and events, including ordering office supplies, creating invoices, etc.
  • CRM software admin utilizing Little Green Light.
  • Coordinate printing and mailing of newsletters and direct mail.
  • Assist with membership renewal communications.
  • Respond to incoming calls to the general office phone number and email, or forward as appropriate.
  • Assist in major FRWC events, as available, and participate in FRWC programs, as desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of financial management principles and best practices, day-to-day accounting practices, 501(c)3 federal and state regulations, and nonprofit administration.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office products, GSuite software.
  • Critical assessment skills with regard to streamlining and improving organizational processes.
  • Attention to detail and ability to analyze and communicate financial and operational data.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a trusted team member of a small, dynamic, and supportive office environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
