Education and Outreach Coordinator

The Education & Outreach Coordinator will provide a central role in recruiting and coordinating volunteers from the community to serve in a variety of programs and will also act as a point person for SYRCL conducting education and outreach for our projects. The Education & Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the oversight, management, and production of a successful River Ambassador Program involving approximately 50 volunteers over the summer. This includes hiring, training, and supervising three part-time River Captain employees and the River Ambassador volunteers. In addition, they will assist with the Yuba River Cleanup in September.

The Education & Outreach Coordinator will develop outreach and training materials, coordinate volunteer training, write e-news articles, and provide support at all Community Engagement events.

NOTE: The Education & Outreach Coordinator must be available to work weekends, May through September. The weekly work schedule will be Thursday through Monday.


  • Coordinate with River Ambassador volunteers to confirm scheduling each weekend.
  • Pick up outreach materials and set up booths each shift.
  • Supervise and train volunteer River Ambassadors on Saturday and Sundays.
  • Model non-confrontational interactions with visitors who are encountered along trails, at beaches, and parking lots with the help of River Ambassadors.
  • Educate visitors about river stewardship and remove trash, dog waste, and fire pits as needed.
  • Educate visitors on SYRCL’s programs. Encourage membership and volunteerism.
  • Maintain daily logs detailing contacts made, litter-collected, and other data.
  • sessions, a mid-season potluck and end-of-season volunteer appreciation event.
  • Develop outreach materials as needed.
  • Maintain organized and fully stocked River Ambassador supply bins.


  • Post-secondary education in natural resources, communications, biological, or environmental sciences and/or equivalent experience
  • Passion to engage, coordinate, and educate volunteers on environmental topics and hands-on stewardship techniques through both written and oral communication
  • Experience creating presentations (to communicate SYRCL’s work to the public)
  • Experience and comfort presenting to groups, i.e., strong public speaking skills
  • Excellent “people skills” and a commitment to positive interactions with diverse community members
  • Experience in supervising and coordinating volunteers
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and exercise good judgment
  • Good leadership and team skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Available to work weekends and occasional evenings
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Personal transportation for work assignments; travel reimbursement provided
  • First Aid experience a plus


  • Able to speak clearly on the phone and in person and be understood by others.
  • Able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Able to work outdoors in the summer season for at least 5-6 hours at a time.
  • Able to walk on trails.


  • Fluency in Spanish; ability to comfortably and confidently speak with river visitors in Spanish.
  • Ability to read and write in Spanish.
  • Previous community engagement, outreach, and tabling experience
  • Graphic design experience: Photoshop and InDesign a plus
  • PR-marketing experience, including social media, Craigslist, WordPress, Mailchimp
  • Experience producing press releases, e-news articles, blog posts, etc.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
