Living Waters

A Benthic Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Manual
by Geoff Dates and Jack Byrne

Benthic macroinvertebrates are important indicators of the health of our rivers because the mix of organisms that make up this community directly reflects water quality and habitat conditions. Since water quality and habitat conditions respond to human activities, benthic macroinvertebrates can tell us how effective our river management activities are in meeting the Clean Water Act objective to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters.”
